We’ll start off with me listening to you. I will offer you a safe, supportive space, where we can really focus on what’s been going on for you and whether there’s anything specific that has brought you into therapy. I will be interested to hear what you feel is working in your life, and what’s not. You don’t need to talk about anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, and you will be the best judge of what, and how much, you want to share.
You might be coming to see me about a specific issue. Or maybe you just have a sense that something in your life isn’t right, without yet knowing what’s wrong. Perhaps you are struggling with your sense of self or with your relationships or are noticing patterns in your life that are unhelpful. Whatever it is that brings you into therapy, I’m here to help and, if I don’t feel that I am the best person to help you, I will offer to support you in finding someone who is.
I’m trained to work relationally, which means that I pay great attention to what is going on between us in therapy and to how we relate to each other, noticing the things you don’t say, as well as the things you do. If we are working together longer term, we can gain a clearer sense of how your unconscious thoughts, feelings and patterns of behaviour may be shaping your experiences and relationships in the here-and-now. This can be especially helpful if we notice that you are stuck in unhelpful patterns of thinking, feeling, behaving or relating to others. In this way, therapy can help you to gain new insights into what is going on for you in the present moment, and why. It can also give you the space and permission to make meaning and to understand yourself better.
As we gain a clearer understanding of how your past and your relationships have shaped you, we can explore together whether there is anything that you would like to change or do differently in the here-and-now. If you are at a crossroads in your life or need to make an important decision, you may just want to book a few sessions to chat through your options in a safe, confidential and supportive environment.
I work from the assumption that you have made the best decisions you could at the time and from the belief that you are of inherent value and worth, just because you are you.
